This year’s Viewer’s Choice winner at Toowoomba Quilters
Inc. annual quilt exhibition announced this week was a colourful art quilt
marking part of Tasmania’s history.
Kathy Adams of KoolKat Quilting took out the award with her
colourful quilt “What a site!”
The quilt was designed to celebrate the site of Tasmania’s
Maritime Museum and Art Gallery at the Gallery’s inaugural quilt challenge and
exhibition two years ago.
Kathy’s quilt won Viewer’s Choice on that occasion and her
quilt has proved no less popular with local quilt enthusiasts during last
month’s quilt show held at the Salo Centre, St Ursula’s College during Carnival
of Flowers week.
Kathy described her inspiration for the quilt as “The salty
sea, ancient land, Port Arthur, the incredible harbour with Hobart at the
epicentre – in all, what a site!”
The quilt was made using hand-dyed silk and discharged dyed
cotton fabric, along with Google Earth images, her own photos and constructed
using machine and hand quilting.
The winners of the Toowoomba Viewer’s Choice award in
the professional section were Kathy Adams and runner-up Robyn Ginn, and in the
amateur section Norelle White and runner-up Trish Ostwald.
