Kathy is a finalist in the 2013 Australian Quilt Convention challenge currently running in Melbourne from today (Thursday 18) to Sunday 21st. The theme of the challenge is "Free" and Kathy's quilt is titled "A Citizen of Woodfordia" based on a photo taken by Geoff at the 2012 Woodford Folk Festival. Woodford Folk Festival attracts some 1000,000 visitors during the Boxing Day to New Year's Day period. They become "Citizens of the Republic of Woodfordia" and many of the visitors adopt their own persona or character, and this photo was simply a person in the crowd.
"A Citizen of Woodfordia" is a wholecloth cloth quilt meaning Kathy started with a "blank canvas" of fabric, then painted the figure and completed the project with intensive quilting using a Sweet Sixteen machine. The finalists (around 30) will go on a national tour of State quilt quilt shows and possibly an international tour. The challenge is sponsored by Expertise Events.
The winners were Helen Godden with her quilt ‘Galloping Wild and Free’ and runner-up was Gillian Shearer with ‘I Am Nujood and I Am Free’. The finalists can be seen here:
